Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS)
Family Access to Medical Insurance Security, the state-sponsored program, provides health coverage to uninsured Virginia children under the age of 19 who meet the family income guidelines.
To qualify for FAMIS, a child must reside within the state of Virginia.. Children may not currently have health insurance, not be eligible for Medicaid or FAMIS Plus or have had coverage within the past 4 months. Children must not be eligible for the Virginia state employee health insurance plan and the family income must meet the guidelines which are based on 200% of the FPL. Children must also be US citizens or a qualified alien.
There is a 4 month waiting period for children of families who have voluntarily cancelled previous health insurance without good cause. This waiting period begins on the termination date of that prior medical insurance coverage.

Health Plan Options
FAMIS offers two types of plans, a fee-for-service plan (FFS) and managed care organization plan (MCO). Most eligible members will be placed on the MCO plan. If an MCO plan is not available in the area that you reside, you will be placed on the FFS plan.
Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurance
Qualifying for FAMIS depend on household income and family size. There is neither an enrollment fee nor monthly premiums charged to eligible Virginia FAMIS members. Minimal co-payments are required for some services which range from $2 to $5. Some services, like regular check-ups, are free.
Program Length, Enrollment and Renewal
FAMIS offers 12 months of continuous coverage and requires a renewal application be submitted at the end of the 12 month period. Renewal acceptance will be based on the family still meeting the eligibility requirements set forth at time of renewal.
