Valid Reasons for Trip Cancellation Insurance Reimbursement

If you have purchased a trip cancellation insurance policy, and you need to cancel your trip, you will only receive reimbursement from the insurance company if your trip was cancelled for specific reasons. You may also be required to provide proof of the validity of the reasons.

Valid reasons for cancellation a trip include:

• The unexpected illness, injury or death of yourself, a travel companion or a family member is a valid reason for canceling your trip. You may be required to provide proof that this incident still exists during your scheduled trip departure date. If the death or injury is that of a family member, that family member does not need to have been included in your trip plans. It is understood that this situation may prevent you from traveling and would thus be a valid reason for reimbursement under your trip cancellation insurance policy.
• You may also cancel your trip if the federal government issues a travel warning due to terrorist activity in the region where you are planning to travel. This warning must not have existed when you scheduled your trip and made your initial deposits.

Other, less common reasons for canceling your trip under your insurance policy include:

• Hijacking
• Jury Duty
• Damage to your primary residence
• Auto accident on the way to your travel destination
• Unexpected unemployment

Keep in mind that you do not purchase trip cancellation insurance in the event that you change your mind or make other arrangements. These reasons are not valid for applying for reimbursement from the insurance company.
