Health Insurance for International Students

Q: I’m looking for insurance for my niece who is an international student from Korea reside in Idaho. What category should I look at?

A: There may be a couple of health insurance options available to her. If we could ask you a few more questions about her situation, we could provide you with better advice:

  1. How long has she been in the U.S.?
  2. How long will she be in the U.S.?
  3. Will she be residing in Idaho for her full stay in the U.S.?
  4. Does she have any pre-existing medical conditions for which she is hoping to receive coverage?
  5. How old is she?

  2. OK, she probably needs to look at an international health plan. She has not been in the U.S. long enough to qualify for domestic issue health insurance. The international health plan will probably place an exclusion on her policy for any treatments related to her asthma, since these types of policies do not provide coverage for most pre-existing medical conditions. However, it will provide her with coverage for other things, which is important if she plans on being here for one year. If she extends her stay past one year, she will be able to renew this type of policy. You can visit the international health insurance section of our website for more information. Since she is only 15, the application will need to be submitted by a parent or legal guardian.
