Insurance for Exchange Student

Q: I have a question about my insurance. I have Korean and american citizenships. Until, last year, I was in Korea, and I just came here this year to study. I think I am going to stay until college, so i am looking for the insurance. My all family still live in Korea and I live with my guardians. So, can you tell me about the insurance that is good for me, and how much it will cost.

A: We do not actually sell insurance through our agency, but we can assist you in looking in the right direction for health insurance. I have a couple of questions that will better help me to let you know what kind of health insurance you need to look for. 1) What is your age? 2) When will you be starting college? 3) Will you be attending college in the U.S.? and 4) are you currently being treated for any medical conditions?

There are many different type of health insurance (personal, short-term, student and international) that offer different levels of coverage at different rates. The type of health insurance you need to obtain will be based on your answers to the questions above.

  1. I am 17 and I am on a student exchange program but I think I will stay longer to go to college. If I stay until college that will start in September of 2007. It will be a U.S. college. I do not have any medical problems.

  2. If the people whom you live with in the U.S. are your legal guardians, they should have the legal capacity to sign an application for health insurance on your behalf. At age 17, you are not able to sign a contract for health insurance. Depending on how long you have been out of the country, you should be able to find an individual health plan in your state that will provide you with coverage. You may be required to get a physical exam if you have not recently received medical treatment in the U.S. The insurance company will want to verify that you are in good health, and this will be hard for them to do if all of your recent health care was received in Korea.

Once you start college you will be able to get student health insurance. This may be offered through the university that you choose to attend
