Student Health Insurance Covered Benefits
In researching your various options for student health insurance, it is helpful to understand the medical coverage you should expect. Although covered benefits may differ from one insurance company to another, there are specific benefits that should be part of any health insurance policy. Since health insurance is also state regulated, the state in which you are attending college may have certain requirements of the insurance companies which make it mandatory to provide coverage for any state imposed regulation. If your state has certain mandates, these should be made clear in the plan brochure of the health insurance policy you are considering.
We have put together a list of covered benefits below that are common amongst most student health insurance policies. Deductibles and coinsurance limits can vary substantially, so we are not addressing those items in this section. A list of covered benefits will not list every medical condition and type of treatment possible, but tend to be all-inclusive. If there are certain medical conditions that are excluded from coverage, or have limitations, those will be addressed in the Student Health Insurance Exclusions and Limitations section.
Common Covered Benefits Include:
- Physician Office Visits
- Hospital Room and Board
- Inpatient Prescription Drugs
- Outpatient Prescription Drugs (Usually with Limitations or Maximums)
- Preventive Health Care (Usually with Limitations or Maximums)
- Hospital Intensive Care
- Outpatient Surgical Procedures
- Lab and Radiology
- Ambulance
- Anesthesiology
- Registered Nurse Fees
- Physiotherapy (Usually with Limitations or Maximums)
- Psychotherapy (Where state mandated and with Limitations)
- Durable Medical Equipment
- Radiation and Chemotherapy
If you have questions regarding a specific benefit, contact the health insurance company or a local health insurance agent in the state where you will be attending college.
