International Health Insurance Exclusions

When searching for the right international health insurance plan, it is important to closely review and consider the limitations and exclusions in the policy description. Although most exclusions are common on any international health plan, there may be limits on certain benefits that you are not comfortable with. An exclusion is any medically related expense for which the insurance company will not reimburse on a claim. This may include:

  • Medical expenses outlined in your accepted exclusionary rider
  • Treatment for substance abuse
  • Experimental medical procedures
  • Services covered by the government or another insurance company
  • Weight reduction procedures and programs
  • Cosmetic Surgery unless reconstructive as related to an accident or injury
  • Infertility treatment
  • Contraceptives
  • Injuries that are self-inflicted
  • Treatments that are not medically necessary
  • Injuries sustained in an act of war or terrorism
  • Charges in excess of the reasonable rate for the provided medical treatment

In addition to these common exclusions, certain benefits may have benefit maximums that are less than the maximum benefit offered for your selected international health insurance plan. These limits should be clearly explained in your plan details and may apply to benefits offered for the following covered benefits:

  • Treatment for mental health disorders
  • Maternity coverage
  • Newborn healthcare
  • Physical therapy
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Dental benefits
  • Life Insurance

Some maximum limitations apply annually, while others may apply to the life of the international health insurance policy. You should also review these considerations before applying for an international health plan.
