What exactly is Health Insurance for Individuals?

Health insurance for individuals is a type of private health care coverage that you pay for on a monthly or yearly basis, and in return your medical expenses are partially covered by the insurance company you have chosen should you be injured or become sick. This coverage also includes some well-check appointments – including yearly checkups – that are essential for keeping you healthy in the long run.

Most Americans get their health insurance through their employer. Employer based health insurance is usually  purchased by the business owner or parent company on behalf of the worker, who may pay part of the premiums, or part of the co-pays, or in some cases doesn't have to pay anything at all.

However, if your employer doesn't offer health insurance, or if you aren't employed, you will need to purchase individual health insurance. Individual health insurance essentially refers to any type of medical coverage plan that isn't paid at least in part by a group organization, including an employer, an organization, or even the federal government. This means that children, families, and unmarried people can all buy into the individual health insurance market if they need to.

However, if you are an unmarried person with no legal dependents, you are looking to purchase health insurance for individuals, which has its own set of rules and requirements that each person should be aware of before they purchase a policy. Knowing what types of coverage are available to you before you start shopping can save you money now, and can prevent financial disaster should you be injured or become ill without the benefit of appropriate coverage.
