Will My Individual Health Insurance Costs Change If I Add a Spouse to my Coverage?

In the individual health insurance market there are two types of coverage - family coverage that includes children and spouses, and individual coverage for those without any dependents.

If you choose to add a spouse to your coverage, your costs and coverage will definitely change, though in some cases not by very much.

For example, if you are a man and you want to add your wife to your coverage, the costs will likely go up since women pay more for coverage than men do. This will definitely be the case if you want maternity coverage as well. In this case the costs would be higher since the better quality coverage and medical costs required of maternity care cost more.

However in some cases your joint health insurance costs could still be less than purchasing two different policies for individual health insurance. You'll need to shop around to be sure, but in many cases adding another healthy person to your medical insurance won't produce premiums that are tremendously high.

Speaking with a broker, doing research, and shopping around are the best ways to find affordable health coverage on the individual market for yourself and your spouse.
