Washington Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Washington CHIP provides health insurance coverage to uninsured Washington children under the age of 19 whose family income falls in the specified income bracket.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Washington CHIP a child must reside within the state of Washington. They may not be eligible for Medicaid or currently have health insurance. They must also be US citizens or a qualified alien immigrant. Families must meet the income guidelines which are based on between 200% and 250% of the federal poverty level.
Waiting Periods
There is a 4 month waiting period for children of families who have voluntarily cancelled previous health insurance. This waiting period begins on the date that the previous medical insurance was terminated. Certain exemptions may apply.

CHIP offers two types of plans, a fee-for-service plan and managed care health plan. The plan assigned to your child will depend on what is available in your county or geographical area.
Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurance
Monthly premiums for the CHIP program are $15 per month, per child, with a $45 monthly cap. Premiums are billed monthly and there are no co-payments required for services covered under Washington CHIP.
Program Length, Enrollment and Renewal
Enrollment in the CHIP program is temporary coverage offering coverage for a period of up to 6 months. You may renew your coverage for an additional six months if you still meet the eligibility requirements.
