Texas Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Texas CHIP, a hild must be under the age of 19 and a resident of Texas. They must also be a US citizen or legal resident and their family income must meet the published guidelines. Children of state employees are not eligible for CHIP, but may apply for SKIP (State Kids Insurance Program).

Waiting Periods
In most cases there is a 90 day waiting period for all new enrollees of the Texas CHIP program. This waiting period applies to those re-enrolling in the program due to a lapse in coverage.

Health Plan Options
The same health plan is available to all eligible Texas CHIP members. The program is offered through various health insurance carriers, such as TexCare and Texas Children's Health Plan. Some insurance companies may provided additional added benefits to Texas CHIP members.

Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurance
The Texas CHIP program enrollment fees and co-payments are based on family income and the number of family members. Enrollment fees do not exceed $50 for each six month term of eligibility. Co-payments are also based on income levels and range from $3 to $10 for certain covered services.

Program Length, Enrollment and Renewal
Enrollment in the Texas CHIP program is temporary coverage and will expire at the end of 6 months. You may apply for renewal prior to the termination of coverage if you still meet the eligibility guidelines.
