Pennsylvania Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Pennsylvania; Children's; Health Insurance Program provides health insurance to all uninsured children and teens under the age of 19 who are not eligible for or enrolled in Medical Assistance.

Eligibility Requirementss
To qualify for Pennsylvania CHIP, a child must be a resident of Pennsylvania. They may not currently be covered by health insurance or be eligible for Medicaid. Children must be a US citizen or legal resident and the family must meet income guidelines based on 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Waiting Periods
Children are required to have been uninsured for six months before being enrolled in the CHIP, with some exceptions.

Health Plan Choicess
CHIP offers one basic health care plan available to all eligible members, regardless of geographical location within Pennsylvania. There are many different insurance companies that provide benefits under CHIP, including Aetna, AmeriChoice, Capital BlueCross, First Priority Health (BCNEPA), Highmark Blue Shield (Central PA), Highmark Blue Cross / Blue Shield (Western PA), Keystone Health Plan East (IBC), Unison Kids, UPMC for Kids.. Providers of the CHIP Health plan vary by county.

Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurancee
Monthly premiums, if any, are minimal and are based on the family income level of qualifying children. There are minimal co-payments required for health care services. Average premiums range from $0 to $195, with co-payments of $0-$50.

Program Length, Enrollment and Renewall
Pennsylvania CHIP offers 12 months of continuous coverage and requires a renewal application be submitted prior to the end of the 12 month period.
