New York Child Health Plus

New York Child Health Plus is a state-sponsored program established with the aim to provide health insurance to uninsured New York children under the age of 19 and whose family income meets the specified income guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Child Health Plus, children must be a resident of New York State. Children who are not eligible for Medicaid (Child Health Plus A) can enroll in Child Health Plus B if they don't already have health insurance and are not eligible for coverage under the public employees' state health benefits plan The family income must fall into the guidelines of one of the plan options. To qualify for the Plus A plan, the family income must below 160% of the federal poverty level.

Waiting Periods
Enrollment in the Child Health Plus B plan may require a six month waiting period from the termination date of prior health insurance coverage. Contact Child Health Plus for more details.

Covered Services and Benefits
Child Health Plus provides health care benefits for:

  • Well-Child Care
  • Physical Exams
  • Immunizations
  • Diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury
  • X-ray and Lab Test
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Emergency Care
  • Prescription and non-prescription drugs if ordered
  • Inpatient hospital medical or surgical care
  • Short-term therapeutic outpatient services (chemotherapy, hemodialysis)
  • Limited inpatient and outpatient treatment for alcoholism and substance abuse, and mental health
  • Dental care
  • Vision care
  • Speech and hearing
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Emergency ambulance transportation to a hospital
  • Hospice

Health Plan Options
The Child Health Plus A plan (formerly Children's Medicaid) is the program that is available to lower income families. The Child Health Plus B plan provides the same level of coverage, but is available to children in slightly higher income levels.

Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurance
There is no monthly premium for the Child Health Plus A plan. Families that qualify for the Plus B plan will pay a monthly premium of $9, $15, $30, $45, or $60 a month per child, depending upon their income and family size. For larger families, the monthly fee is capped at three children. If the family's income is more than 400% of the federal poverty level, they pay the full monthly premium charged by the health plan. There are no co-payments for services under Child Health Plus.
