More State Children's Health Insurance Programs
MIChild, the state-sponsored children's health insurance program offers health coverage to children in low-income families and under the age of 19 provided they do not qualify for Medicaid.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for MIChild, the applicant must be a resident of Michigan and U.S. citizen or a documented alien. Some legal immigrants may not be eligible for coverage until they have been a resident for 5 years. You are not eligible if you have other health insurance, or have had health insurance in the past 6 months that was terminated voluntarily. Adjusted gross family income must be 150% to 200% of the federal poverty level. For children under 1 year of age, the adjusted gross income must be above 185% and at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Pregnant women may also be eligible for coverage if they meet the income guidelines.
Waiting Periods
If you have had other health insurance that was terminated voluntarily, you must wait 6 months from the termination date of that coverage before you can enroll in Michigan's children's health plan.

Health Plan Options
There are many HMO and other health care plans in Michigan that accept members qualified under the MIChild guidelines. The level of coverage provided by each of these participating insurance companies must meet MIChild guidelines, so the coverage is similar regardless of which health plan you select.
Premium Payments, Co-Payments and Coinsurance
There is a $10 per family premium payment required to maintain coverage under MIChild. There are no co-pays or deductibles.
Program Length, Enrollment and Renewal
MIChild coverage last for 12 months from the date of enrollment. Prior to the expiration of coverage, you will have the option to renew you coverage for an additional 12 months. To be eligible for renewal, you are required to complete an application to make sure you still meet the requirements of participating in this program. A financial review will be part of the application.
