Dental Health Insurance Benefits

Regardless of the type of dental health insurance that you choose, the list of covered benefits is common among them all. When looking for the right dental insurance plan, you should compare the standard list of covered benefits to make sure that your dental insurance plan provides you with these benefits.

The covered benefits that you should expect from your dental insurance plan include:

  • Preventive Dental Care; including regular check-ups, routine cleanings and topical fluoride treatments
  • Basic Dental Care; including x-rays, simple extractions, filings and space maintainers
  • Major Dental care; including crowns, bridges, pontics, sealants, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, surgical extractions and dentures

Most dental insurance plans do not provide benefits for orthodontics, but some plans may offer limited benefits at discounted rates or high deductibles.

Depending on the type of dental insurance plan you select, you may have a maximum annual benefit limit. This is most common with indemnity dental plans and PPO dental plans. Once your maximum annual benefit has been met, you will be fully responsible for any dental treatments in excess of this annual limit. Most HMO dental plans do not place a maximum annual benefit on covered services. When choosing a dental insurance plan, make sure to completely review and understand the covered benefits offered as well as the dental plan's exclusions and limitations.
