AvMed Health Plans

With its name derived from the words "aviation medicine", AvMed was first developed in 1969 to provide pilots in the Miami area with an affordable prepaid quality health plan option. Having established itself within the industry, AvMed applied for and received licensing as a Health Maintenance Organization in 1973. Federal qualification would follow four years later in 1977. Medicare products were added to AvMed's portfolio in 1982. In 1986, the company was acquired by SantaFe HealthCare who converted AvMed's status to that of a not-for-profit company. Today, AvMed is Florida's oldest and largest not-for-profit health plan, offering health insurance coverage to large and small businesses in major metropolitan areas throughout Florida, and providing members with a superior network of healthcare professionals.

Group health plan designs through AvMed Health Plans are offered as large or small group medical insurance coverage. Large groups represent employer groups of 51 or more employees, while small group coverage focuses on employer groups of 1 - 50 employees. Realizing that employers need to be provided with choice and flexibility when purchasing medical insurance for their employees, AvMed offers a broad range of product options, funding alternatives and affordable pricing. All plans offered through AvMed Health Plans are supported by unsurpassed customer service, offering assistance for both administrative and medical issues. Included in AVMed's Large and Small Group portfolio of plans are the AvMed Choice, AvMed Open Access HMO, AvMed Open Access, AvMed Consumer, AvMed HSA, AvMed Classic, AvMed Open Access POS and AvMed Classic POS. All products offered through AvMed's Large and Small Group portfolio of health plans are available with various co-payments, co-insurance, and deductible options.

South Florida: Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
West Florida: Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties.
North/Central Florida: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, St. Johns, Suwannee, and Union counties.

Recent AvMed Health Plans News

• January 2007 ? AvMed to increase online management tools for members by offering iHealth personal health records in spring 2007.
• November 2006 ? AvMed expands large group health plan coverage to South Lake County. Available to groups of more than 50 employees, AvMed will now serve businesses in Groveland, Clermont and Montverde.
• September 2006 ? The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) bestows Excellent Accreditation rating on AvMed Health Plans.
