History of UHC

In 1974 a group of physicians got together with the idea to offer expanded health care options to patients, forming what was to become known as Charter Med Inc. Their innovative thinking and quality health care services allowed them to grow. In 1977, after only a few short years, Charter Med Inc. was acquired by United Healthcare Corporation. In 1999, as a result of strong leadership and the diversity included in their line of health products, United Healthcare reported annual revenues in excess of $400 million. Now celebrating 30 years of committed service, the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses provides health benefits to more than 70 million Americans nationwide.

Composition of UHC

The UnitedHealth Group family includes United Healthcare, Ovations, AmeriChoice, Uniprise, Specialized Care Services and Ingenix, each offering different products and services to our members.

United Healthcare focuses on the needs of the individual, family, small and mid-size employer groups.

AmeriChoice provides health care benefits to beneficiaries of Medicaid and other state-sponsored health programs. Although plan names may vary by state, all plans offer high quality medical benefits.

Ovations products are geared toward the senior market, with many of their products being designed specifically for AARP, including Medicare Supplements and group hospital insurance plans, prescription drug discount programs and easy access to many health and well-being products.

Uniprise is responsible for assisting large groups in the development and customization of their health care benefits. Administration support is also offered through Uniprise and includes enrollment, eligibility, claims processing, billing and banking and personal customer service affiliations.

Specialized Care Services offers a constantly growing field of specialized health benefits. These benefits include behavioral health, dental health, vision, chiropractic, stop loss insurance plans, critical illness plans and even care coordination services.

Ingenix provides the health care community with viable technology to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible.
