Applying With Multiple Insurance Companies
I need to get some personal health insurance but I am not sure if the different insurance companies will accept me. I read your section on applying for health insurance and it was real helpful but I did not read anything about applying for more than one insurance company at the same time. Are there any pros or cons to doing that? I figured I can apply with 3 or 4 insurance companies at the same time and then pick the one I want if I get approved by more than one. Can I do that?
Yes, you can apply with multiple health insurance companies at the same time, but the time and effort involved in doing so may not be productive. Most insurance companies will request that you submit the first month premium along with your application. This shows good faith that they are not wasting your time in processing your application. If you are approved for coverage, you have the right to change your mind and get a refund on your initial deposit amount. Some insurance companies may deduct an application processing fee from your deposit if you choose to not accept their coverage. Although the underwriting guidelines may differ from one insurance company to another, your ability to qualify for coverage will be the same with the different companies in about 80% of the cases.
Are you considering submitting multiple applications because you are concerned about a pre-existing medical condition or your health history? If so, there may be a more convenient and efficient way for you to accomplish this. Also, in which state do you reside?
I have high-blood pressure and I am about 50 pounds overweight. I live in Texas. What is an easier way? Can I do one application that I can send to different companies?

Each insurance companies uses their own application, so there is no way you can use one application that you can send to different companies. Weight is definitely something that the insurance companies look at, but you can find out what their guidelines are by calling them. Or, work with a health insurance broker that represents different insurance companies in Texas. They should be familiar with the guidelines of the different insurance companies. If your height and weight does not fall within their medical underwriting guidelines, there is no sense in submitting an application. Some insurance companies may accept you at a slight increase in premium. So, the best thing to do is contact the insurance company and be honest with them about your height and weight.

Absolutely you can apply with many health insurance companies for as many health care plans as you want, but why would you really want to do that? It’s so easy to just get quotes online today. Just go get quotes for health care plans from many providers and then compare them on price and benefits. THEN you pick the best deal and apply. But if you are worried that you might be turned away and denied coverage, there is nothing stopping you from applying to several at the same time. But you should also keep in mind that even if you have more than one insurance policy, you can never get more in return than 100% of your costs.
