I am in need of short term medical coverage between school and a new job. There is a 2 month window currently that I will not be covered until the new job insurance kicks in. Since I am an expecting father, it looks like several agencies want to deny me. I’ve read other responses on this site regarding this issue, but logically I am still confused for 2 reasons: a) The baby will still be in uterus when the short term insurance lapses, and b) I am not asking for coverage for them. Please advise? I am willing to pay a high premium if needed…I would think the odds would be in the insurance companies favor…

Short-term health insurance applications typically don’t go through an underwriting review process by an actual underwriter. They are quick applications in which you answer just a few questions. If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you are not eligible. One of these questions in “now pregnant, and expectant parent, in the process of adopting a child or undergoing infertility treatment.” As you may have read in similar questions addressed in this forum, the insurance carriers are forced by law to include a newborn child on the existing policy of either parent.

I understand that you are only requiring 60 days of coverage, but there could still be a potential risk with a premature birth. You might try contacting a short-term health insurance carrier directly and ask if there is a way to bypass the standard application process and submit through an underwriter for review, but we doubt they will be very receptive since it is outside of standard protocol.

Are you coming off a student health plan for which you are no longer eligible? Does your wife have group health coverage that you might be able to join?
