What is the public health insurance option in the US? How would it work in the country?

Proposals for a public health insurance option imply the establishment of a National Health Exchange to provide coverage for those who do not have insurance coverage from their employers and those who work for small business and have opted to participate in such public insurance option.

Those who will buy a plan through the National Health Exchange, will receive a subsidy based on their ability to pay for the premium. Rules indicate that no one will be rejected from coverage on the basis of gender, age or pre-existing condition. Those who will be insured will receive comprehensive medical, mental health and dental benefits.

The National Health Exchange will be offering a public health insurance plan under the administration of the national government, similar to the administration of Medicare.

In contrast to a private health insurance plan, a public health insurance option is expected to have better quality at lower costs. It will be managed by the government and is not expected to generate profit. Public health plans will essentially lower administration costs because of economies of scale and bargaining on prescription drugs.

There are pros and cons into the establishment and creation of a public health insurance option in the country. The Health Care for America Now Coalition in particular, recommends a choice of private insurance plan which you can keep if you want to or a public health insurance plan that guarantees affordable health coverage without a private insurance provider as middleman.

You can read through several articles about public health insurance for more information on this proposal and be ready to make your choice in the future.
