Short-Term Health Insurance in New York?
I am quitting my teaching job in December in Ohio in order to move to NY. I plan on having a teaching job in NY beginning in February. I would like to have temporary health coverage in the meantime. What are my options for health care? Do I try to get the coverage through Ohio or NY?
You may have a difficult time purchasing a short-term health insurance policy under a New York address. This is because the health insurance regulations in that state are different from most other states. New York is a “guaranteed issue” state, meaning that all persons are eligible for a permanent issue individual health plan. Insurance carriers, such as Assurant Health, do not offer their product line in New York because of this regulation. If you purchase the short term health plan in Ohio, we are not sure if that coverage will terminate immediately upon your moving to New York. This would be a question best asked to the company that issues the temporary policy. The policies may vary from one insurance company to another.
Have you considered going on your COBRA plan until your new group coverage starts in February? It might be a more logical solution to your problem. You can check with your current insurance company to see if that policy will cover you in New York for that short period of time. If it is a PPO plan, you should be able to receive benefits under the “out-of-network” coverage available through your carrier.
Where can a new college graduate get some affordable short term health insurance? I don’t know what to do about my health insurance situation now that I have graduated from college. I am going to be unemployed for some time while I search for jobs in my field. Very competitive! I would also like to take the time to do some things that I have wanted to do for long such as volunteer work with minority groups. But if I am not a full time student, then my parents health insurance (Coventry Health I think), will not cover me anymore. And if I don’t find a job right away, then I will essentially be uninsured. Do you have any idea where I can get affordable short term health insurance?
