Do I Need A Social Security Number?

Q: I need to know if one needs a social security number to receive coverage from your insurance plan. If not, I need a quote. I am a 40 year old hispanic woman with a 16 year old son. I live in Virginia.

A: Not all insurance companies offering individual health insurance in Virginia require that an applicant has a social security number. However, they will require that you prove that you are a legal resident of the state and that you have maintained residency for a specific period of time. The length of time that you must prove residency will vary from one insurance company to another. We do not provide health insurance quotes, but you can contact an agent from our individual health insurance directory.

Your son may be eligible for the Virginia’s CHIP program, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security. This is a government sponsored health plan for families in lower income brackets. The restrictions on residency may be more lenient on these plans than on standard issue individual health plans, but you must also meet their income guidelines.

  1. thank you. I think I can my son on the childrens health insurance that you mention, but I still need to find insurance for me. I have been here for 2 years but I do not work. My husband works but he has insurance from his company. How can I get insurance for me?

  2. Your options will depend on your legal status. If you are a legal resident of the U.S., you should have several options available to you because you have been here for 2 years. There are individual health insurance companies or international health plans that may be able to insure you. Also, have you checked the requirements to be added to your husband’s group health plan. If you are in the U.S. without legal documentation, you may not have options. The best thing to do would be check with your state’s Medicaid program to see if you are eligible for any of their state sponsored health care programs.

  3. How do I add my wife to my Coventry Health Care health insurance from work, when she doesn’t have a social security number yet. So, my wife and I met a year ago abroad and well, things happened fast and now she is here with me in the US. She entered the country on a fiance visa and we did get married within the limit, which is 90 days. The problem is my health insurance company, Coventry Health Care, does not allow me to add her because she has no social security number. That’s a real problem because it will take months for her to get it. What do you advice us to do?
