My mother, already in her 60s owns a Medicare health plan. She is moving out of New York this coming March to live in Massachusetts. But it seems that the state where she’s going doesn’t have the same medical plan she had here in New York. Because of this she is somehow planning to go back to United Health Care which she had previously owned a health insurance policy. Will someone under Medicare health insurance coverage be able to transfer to another health insurance plan of another state?

Any member of the family who moves outside of the service area of a current Medicare health plan is entitled to transfer to any Medicare health plan provided on the place he/she is going.  In the case of your mother going out of New York, she can make this change at the time she moves in.  A special enrollment period will be allotted for her where she can sign up for a Medicare health plan available in the state she is moving to.

Most seniors, however, prefer the original Medicare plans (Plan A and B) for their health needs.  Aside from being available to almost anywhere, these Medicare health plans have an unfailing support of almost all health providers.
