Does Medicare automatically enroll individuals when they turn 65 years old? And on what exact date does Medicare coverage eligibility begin when somebody turns 65?
If you still do not have Medicare coverage and your 65th birthday is approaching, you shall receive an Initial Enrollment Package three months before your birthday. Included in the package are comprehensive information about Medicare coverage and benefits, questionnaire, and the red, white and blue Medicare card. It is still advisable that you check with Social Security if you can sign up for Medicare coverage. You have an option to get Part A and/or Part B depending on what you feel you need the best. Just indicate your choice or choices by putting an X-mark at the back of the Medicare card. Send it back to the Social Security who will then send a new card. Medicare coverage officially begins on the first day of your birth month. For example, you will be turning 65 years old on June 15, you can use your Medicare benefits on June 1. But if you were born on July 1, Medicare coverage starts also on June 1. There is a seven-month allowed period for enrollment on Medicare coverage. It starts three months before and three months after the birth month. However, if you signed up within your birth month, Medicare coverage will be effective on the first day of the coming month.
