I have a friend who is going through a divorce but has some medical issues. What are the laws as far as coverage of treatments already started when the divorce takes place?

Just because your friend is going through a divorce does not mean he will lose his current health insurance coverage. Do you know if he is insured through an employer, or if they are on a private family plan? He needs to make sure he keeps his insurance, and knowing the type of coverage he has will allow us to better advise.

If he is insured under his spouse’s group medical plan, he will be able to continue on the policy under COBRA even if the policy was through a small company. Wisconsin has a mini-Cobra law that allows for 18 months of continuation of coverage if he loses his dependent status under the group plan
