What does age have to do with medical insurance cost? I’m young and physically fit but my family is urging me to get a health insurance plan.

Age and gender for that matter, have a lot to do with medical insurance cost. An individual health insurance plan in general, is based on age and gets more expensive when you get older. A corporate medical insurance plan or group health plan might not cost as much especially for young employees because the employer pays part of it.

Most insurance companies have adapted the demographic rating system where the pricing depends on the likelihood and frequency that the health insurance plan will be used. Women and the elderly tend to use most of their health coverage thus making their health plans more expensive. The young and healthy individual who has favorable medical history is more likely to have cheaper health plans.

However, even if you are young but has a pre-existing condition or whose health record indicates that you’ll use health care more often, your health insurance policy might be expensive.

In some ways, health insurance companies also have to protect their business. If they pay for fewer policies then it is good for the company.

There are state laws that determine the rates of medical insurance cost. Some of these states allow insurers to double the price of health plans for older people as compared with the younger ones. You can check with the insurance department to learn how they regulate medical insurance cost in your state.
