My husband is currently on Cobra until 5/2010. He has a pre-existing condition. Due to his condition he can not get major medical coverage under a private plan. What type of insurance could we get for him that would cover illness if hospitalized and all of his doctors without having to go into savings if treatment is needed.

In the state of Nevada, all insurance companies offering individual health insurance must guarantee coverage to any person applying for coverage that is HIPAA eligible. If your husband remains on his COBRA until the expiration date, he will automatically be HIPAA eligible. At least two standardized plans will be available from each individual health insurance company in Nevada, but they are allowed to charge a slightly higher monthly premium for those persons requiring guaranteed issue coverage.

Since rates and regulations are subject to change, comparing your HIPAA options at this point may not prove productive. We recommend beginning your comparisons about 10 weeks prior to the termination of COBRA. Your best option is to contact a health insurance broker that represents multiple insurance companies and can assist you in comparing multiple HIPAA quotes. You may also contact the Nevada Department of Insurance for more information.
