I just moved here and heard about the Maryland Health Insurance Plan. What are the requirements to qualify for coverage with MHIP? What plans do they offer?

Maryland’s health insurance program normally requires you to have at least six months of residency. If you just moved to the state, you can still be eligible for the Maryland Health Insurance Plan if you meet certain conditions.

For example, if you recently lost group health insurance coverage, the six-month residency requirement won’t apply to your application. Other eligibility requirements include having a qualifying medical condition and having been recently denied insurance due to a pre-existing condition.

Two BlueCross BlueShield Association licensees administer MHIP: CareFirst BlueChoice and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. As far as I can remember, they offer four health insurance options, an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) Plan, two PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) options, and an HDHP (High-Deductible Health Plan).

I think you’ll find all the information you need at the Maryland Health Insurance Plan website. They have the complete list of requirements, downloadable forms, cost and benefits, and other information about the plan. You can download the application there and just follow the instructions on the website to apply.
