A newborn child can be a big liability to the insurance company. Even if they are born completely healthy, there will be regular check-ups as part of the post-natal treatment. But, this is not the primary concern of the insurance company. They are concerned that the child will be born with complications that require lengthy hospital stays and monitoring by highly compensated medical specialists. Since they have no way of predicting the future health of an unborn child, they are not able to accurately access their risks in providing insurance to this newborn. A newborn child may be automatically added to the existing health insurance coverage of a parent, regardless of the health of the newborn child. A newborn child is automatically covered under the policy for the first 31 days. Within this 31 day automatic coverage period, you will need to notify your insurance company if you wish for the newborn to be permanently included on your policy. At this point, the insurance company will modify your monthly premium to include your new dependent.
