My adult son moved to Alabama a few years ago to pursue a graduate degree. He has maintained student health insurance. He was recently diagnosed with a serious illness that may require several months of treatment, including possible hospitalization. His insurance has treated him fairly well for treatments in Alabama, but we’ve learned that it will cover very little if he returns home to Michigan for the same treatments. (When he needed treatment during a recent visit, it became necessary to transport him back to Alabama to avoid thousands of dollars in penalties.)The illness is bad enough, but having to endure it away from home and family makes it worse. Is there any way to transfer his coverage without incurring large out-of-pocket expenses?

These are the most difficult types of questions to answer because we sincerely sympathize with your situation, but are limited as to how we can help.

Has your son left school and moved back to Michigan? Or is this a likely possibility?

Because he is on a student health insurance plan, his maintaining his coverage may likely be dependent on his staying in school. Be sure to understand the terms of the policy before choosing to move him home, if you have any choice at all in this unfortunate matter.

Do you or your spouse have access to a group health insurance policy through an employer? If so, and depending on your son’s age, this could be a possible solution for getting him adequate coverage in Michigan. However, it sounds like his primary residency is in Alabama, so you don’t want to affect the level of care he is receiving there. As for finding other individual or student health insurance for him with better out-of-state benefits could be unlikely, given the fact that he is currently going through medical treatments.
