What are the different Louisiana health insurance options that I have? I don’t have much cash to spend on insurance but I want my kids and I to have some type of health plan in case something happens.

There are several Louisiana health insurance options that you can consider getting. Individual insurance policies, the Louisiana Health Plan (LHP), the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP), the Louisiana Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), and Medicaid are all available in your state.

You can try getting individual Louisiana health insurance policies if you are able to pay the premiums and the deductibles of the plans. Keep in mind that although the state’s department of insurance regulates insurance matters in your area, some companies might reject your application for coverage. Usually, rejection is caused by the current health condition of the applicant. Some companies accept individuals with certain health problems but the insurers usually provide pre-existing condition exclusions.

If you are unable to get health insurance because of your pre-existing medical condition, you can try getting the LHP. If you can’t afford insurance for your kids because you earn 200% of the federal poverty level or less, then your children might qualify for LaCHIP. You can check out your state’s insurance department to find out how to qualify for these two programs.

Medicaid is another Louisiana health insurance option for individuals who cannot afford healthcare services. People with disability and women and children under 19 who meet Medicaid eligibility requirements can receive assistance from this program.
