Health Insurance and Prosthetics

I am a recent amputee and would like to know how often my prosthesis can be changed. My limb was already atrophied and the end is going down quickly. The prosthetic leg is heavy and I think it is causing some of the problems I am having with pain and having to wear more and more socks to make for the space. Do I need to talk to my prosthetist or doctor or both. And will the insurance pay for a new prosthesis.

Our website is a consumer resource site strictly pertaining to many questions about health insurance. We are unqualified to provide medical advice. We are also unable to confirm if your insurance will cover a new prosthesis. This would be a question for your insurance company. I think the first step is to talk to your physician, who will then consult with the prosthetist and submit a pre-authorization form to the insurance company. This is the way that most medical claims are handled, and many insurance companies require that a physician request pre-authorization for these types of medical claims. The decision from your insurance company will be based on how the claim is explained and supported by your physician.

  1. Hi, I have a question about he Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act. I am looking for a list of all items that must be covered by insurance by law. My mother has Blueshield of California and she is a survivor of cancer. She has been treated for breast cancer and now has a prostheses. She has been informed by her insurance company that they do only cover one new prostheses every three years, but the thing is, in the Womens Health and Cancer Rights Act, we are told that she has the rights to one every year. Do you know if there is any other items aside from reconstructive surgery that is covered under this act such as special bra’s or swimsuits?
