What are the things I should consider when shopping for good individual health insurance plans for me and my fiancée?
If you are choosing between an HMO’s or a PPO’s individual health insurance plans, then you should think about whether keeping your current doctors now is important to both of you. HMOs require you to choose a primary care physician who will give you referrals first before you can see specialists outside of the network or undergo special treatments. PPOs allow you more freedom on which doctors to see, but you will have to watch out for the co-payment amounts. You should also think about the level of coverage that you want with your health plans. Do you need little things like colds and flu covered? It’s also important at this stage that you decide how high the deductibles and the premiums you and your fiancée can pay. Usually, health insurance policies that have higher deductibles have lower premiums. You can get quotes for different insurance plans from several insurance companies to check your options. Most individual health insurance plans have pre-existing conditions exclusions. If you or your fiancée have pre-existing health issues, then the insurers might offer you insurance but with exclusions. You can also try to join a group health insurance if your employers offer health benefits. The premiums will be lower and pre-existing conditions exclusions will not apply.
