What benefits will I get with an HMO health insurance plan? I’m getting HMO through my employer, but I already have an individual PPO plan. Which one is better?
When you have HMO health insurance, you will have to choose your primary care physician who’ll be in charge of your health care. Your primary care doctor will also be the one to issue you referrals in case you need to see specialists for further treatment. One disadvantage of using HMOs though is that it has limited coverage when it comes to emergency care. Also, healthcare that you’ll receive outside of the network is usually not covered if your primary care doesn’t approve of it. With an HMO plan, you are sometimes required to make co-payments for some medical services you receive whose amount depends on your plan’s coverage. Doctor’s office visits and prescriptions sometimes require co-pays, although there are other services that don’t charge anything at all. Another good thing about being under an HMO plan is that you don’t need to file claim forms for hospital stays and consultations. You usually just present your HMO members card. If you’re still not sure whether to drop your current individual health insurance for an HMO health insurance plan or not, you can always consult with a local insurance broker. The insurance agent can explain to you the advantages and disadvantages of choosing an HMO plan over your PPO health plan.
