I’m trying to make up my mind between HMO and PPO plans being suggested to me by my health insurance agent. Are these two types of plan essentially the same?
HMO and PPO plans have both advantages and disadvantages. The HMO is a good choice for families or individuals who need to keep their out-of-pocket expenses low. If you prefer to have your co-pay amounts low, then maybe you should get an HMO insurance plan. The deductible of this type of health insurance plan will also be lower compared to other types of health plans. The down side of having an HMO plan for some people is that you can only go to physicians or hospitals that are within the HMO’s network if you want the medical expenses to be covered by your policy. Referrals to specialists must also go through your primary care provider. PPO health insurance plans on the other hand is said to be better for people who like to have more control over their health care preferences. They can go to any in-network or out-of-network doctor or hospital to receive medical services. Your policy will cover these medical expenses but keep in mind that you will just have to pay more for services received from a non-preferred provider. HMO and PPO plans are the same in some aspects, but these two types of health insurance plans provide medical care to their policyholders differently.
