Why is the health insurance premium the same for everyone under one group health plan?
Another reason why the health insurance premium you pay is the same for everyone else in the group is because your employer cannot discriminate anyone with regard to offering health insurance. If the employer is offering health insurance, then all employees are entitled to healthcare benefits regardless of their medical condition. The employer cannot legally pry into its employees’ medical conditions in order to single out the ones with possible health issues. Also, pre-existing conditions do not apply in group health plans. All employees pay the same premium regardless of the other members’ health conditions. If you are getting your own private health insurance though, there’s likelihood that your health insurance premium is different from another individual’s insurance premium. This is because age, gender, medical history, and pre-disposition for certain illnesses or disorders affect the coverage and insurance rates of your health plan.
