How can I drop a health insurance policy which I did not purchase? A university included me in a mandatory health plan but I don’t really need it.
You can ask the school what the repercussions are if you dropped the health insurance policy. But if it is a group health plan, it may be difficult to remove you in the plan unless it’s time for open enrollment period. The open enrollment period happens once or twice a year. It is that period where the insured can add dependents or make changes in their policy. If you are an employee in the university and already have a personal individual insurance, you can take the minimum coverage of the group plan since the employer pays for the larger percentage of the premium. But if you agreed from the start that you be included in the policy, and you suddenly want out, it may affect the whole group health plan. This move will also affect the benefits of the rest of employees included in the plan. There are some health insurance plans that allow exclusion from the plan. Since you are part of the health insurance policy, try discussing it with the insurance carrier. You can also talk to university authorities to inform them that you already have your own insurance plan. Maybe somebody else needs it and you can work out some scheme so that they will find a replacement for you in the said group plan.
