What are the health insurance options for a self-employed person like me?

Some people think that they have no health insurance options if they’re unemployed or have just become self-employed. Health benefits provided by an employer are not your only option for private health insurance. There are several easy insurance options for self-employed individuals.

One of the health insurance options that you have is COBRA or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. If you plan to take the health insurance policy from your previous employment with you, you can use COBRA. Under COBRA, you will be required to pay the full premium that your employer was previously supplementing. COBRA lasts for only 18 months or until you can find another health plan.

An easy way to get long-term health coverage is through your spouse’s health insurance. If your spouse receives health benefits from his or her employer, then you can be added as dependent. The premium your spouse pays might change a bit but that’s acceptable expenses since you’re now covered under her plan.

If the two mentioned health insurance options do not fit your current situation, then you should consider getting an individual health insurance policy. Premiums for this type of insurance plan will depend on your age and medical history. Several companies might turn down your application if you have pre-existing condition, or if they accept you, they can put a rider or exclusion to your pre-existing condition. An individual policy might be a good option because the rates can sometimes be lower than the rates in a group plan.
