How does one get health insurance for unemployed individuals? My husband just lost his job but I have mine. I am wondering if I can get him an insurance plan through my own policy?
Since your husband just lost his job, either he was laid off, terminated or has resigned from his previous job, your husband could continue his insurance coverage from his previous employer for a certain period. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1986 provides for this type of health insurance for unemployed individuals. COBRA basically requires employers to maintain the insurance of their employees who no longer work for them, just as long as the employee can afford the premiums. This coverage is best for the unemployed because the employee’s coverage is not interrupted. However, your husband may have to pay premiums that are higher than what he was usually paying for an employer-sponsored coverage. Another health insurance option for your husband is for him to sign under your insurance coverage as your spouse or as next of kin. I am assuming that you are employed since you said you have a health insurance plan. So what you can do is call your company’s human resources (HR) benefits department. Ask your HR about additional premiums that may be deducted from your paycheck as the employed spouse. Your husband can also check out insurance websites and start comparing insurance plans that are offered by various insurance providers specifically to the unemployed. He can access several providers online by simply filling out a form and asking them about their insurance products. There are some insurance companies that do not even require employment to grant insurance coverage. These companies usually offer health insurance for unemployed individuals just as long as that individual has a verifiable bank account.
