I am currently insured by my employer through a group policy. I will not be working with this employer after August 31st, thus losing insurance coverage at that time. My husband and I have discussed trying to start a family in the month of August. I need to move from my employer sponsored group plan to an individual plan. How do insurance companyies figure out when a person became pregnant. It is plausible that I could apply for individual coverage and not know that I am preganant. I am concerned about not being able to be covered. My other idea is to apply for the coverage before finding out I am pregnant. I still need to know how far back they date the start date of the pregnancy.
Furthermore, most individual health insurance plans that offer maternity benefits will have a waiting period for maternity benefits. A common waiting period is 12 months. If you leave your current place of employment, you do not have to give up your current insurance. You will be provided with a COBRA option that will allow you to continue insured under this plan, but you will be responsible for paying the premium.
