What are the steps to becoming a health insurance agent?

To become a health insurance agent, you need to familiarize yourself with the health insurance field. You can achieve this by working part-time for health insurance agencies (if you’re still in college) or by observing or working closely with an established insurance agent.

To get accepted in insurance companies, it’s an advantage to have received a bachelor’s degree in business or economics. Most health insurance companies prefer hiring health insurance agents who have backgrounds in finance, math, accounting, business, and even public speaking. For those interested to become insurance agents but don’t have degrees in business or other related courses, they can take insurance education and training classes. There are even online courses being offered to individuals who want to become health insurance agents.

The next step is to get a license. Many states require agents to have a sponsor to obtain a license. Other states might waive the sponsorship requirement under certain circumstances. Once the health insurance agent passes the licensure exams, he can then obtain contracts. He can also receive training as part of an insurance company but the commission he’ll get might be reduced and he’ll have limited product offerings.

The health insurance agent can also try to get appointed with carriers that offer major medical health insurance. He just needs to fill out contracting paperwork and pay the appointment fee to the state. He can then obtain a list of insurance carriers from the state insurance department. The insurance agent also has the option to be an independent agent.
