I am just a retired citizen who no one has probably ever heard of. Anyway, can you please tell me how many health care insurance providers there are in the United States? The other day an unknown source said 1600. My reason for asking is that since there are hundreds of companies already in the business, it would be a complete waste of money for the Government to start another competing program! I need this information to try to convince various people to use some common sense–and save billions of dollars–since the Government is not good at running anything anyhow.

The Government has several advantages over Health Insurance providers, namely no profit expectations and a large pool of potential insureds. In addition, the ability to subsidize the costs health care makes a public option, or, better yet, a single payor system likely substantially more cost effective for the consumer.
As such, a public option, at the least, or a single payor system, at best, is a better alternative than any private health insurance program.
Private health insurance is an industry that provides no real product or service, but simply adds to the cost of health care, and one that can, and should, be replaced with a government run program.
