I’m wondering if I can get health insurance even after getting turned down before for salary protection insurance because I was once treated with depression. Will my depression affect my application? I’m also about to become self-employed.
There may be instances where an insurance provider will approve your application to get health insurance despite your depression. However, they might include a pre-existing condition exclusion to your policy. Most insurance companies that offer individual health plans have specific guidelines in determining the terms of exclusion in the policy. Several companies also raise their premiums slightly for people who have pre-existing exclusions so you might have to pay more for your plan. You can also try to get health insurance plans that cover mental illnesses. If you can’t get health insurance right after you become self-employed, you should consider COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) insurance coverage. You can use this coverage for several months until you get an individual health insurance plan. Answer by general public - June 18, 2009 @ 9:22 am 1 CommentLeave a comment |

If you are going to start your own business and you have 2 employees (including yourself) you can start your own group. With a Small Group plan you do not go through underwriting, that is for California. Which makes you automatically approved no matter what pre-existing conditions you have.
