Gap Insurance To Pay Deductible
Who can provide ‘gap’ coverage insurance for $500 deductible monthly Medi-Cal insurance to bring my share of cost to zero? I already spend $400/month on health not covered by Medi-Cal on $1000/month fixed income?
Okay, let’s make sure we understand your question. You are probably using the incorrect health insurance terminology in some of your explanation. Are you saying that you are covered under Medi-Cal, which is California’s Medicaid program, but they are not paying for all of your medical expenses? Is the $500 monthly deductible that you are saying you need to pay the amount that Medi-Cal has determined is your monthly share of cost? This seems a bit high for somebody with a monthly income of only $1,000 per month. It sounds like you are looking for an insurance company that will pay your Medi-Cal share-of-cost percentage. Is this correct? If so, we are not aware of an insurance plan that offers this type of coverage.
Well, that’s what it is. I qualify for the Medi-Cal program because of my low income, but they still make me pay the first $400 per month of my own medical expenses. They only pay for expenses over that amount. So, I need insurance that will pay for the $400 per month that I need to pay out of my own pocket.

We are not aware of any insurance that will pay your monthly Medi-Cal share of cost. The only thing we can suggest is to replace your Medi-Cal coverage with a more comprehensive individual health insurance plan. You will have a monthly premium that you must pay. Depending on your age, you should be able to get decent coverage for far less than $400 per month. However, if you have pre-existing medical conditions, it could affect your ability to obtain an individual health plan.

Can you have other private insurance while you are on Medi-Cal? Is it legal? Many doctors do not accept Medi-Cal as good enough and want you to have better health insurance on the side. Can you tell me what good insurance is in California and what it will cost me? If I buy new insurance how will the deductible work? Can Medi-Cal cover my deductible? I know it’s many questions at once, but I just moved to California and is on my own for the first time here!
