I’m moving back to the US after living abroad for a few years. My permanent address / driver’s license / voting registration are all still in Florida, but I’ll be moving straight to New York. I want to get temporary coverage as soon as possible - should I get coverage under a NY plan or FL? I won’t have much proof of being a resident of NY to start out, but if I get Floridian insurance, will it be valid in NY?
You may have no choice but to purchase short-term health insurance in Florida. New York has unique insurance regulations that prevent short-term health insurance carriers from offering coverage in that state. Most short-term health plans provide you with coverage nationwide, so your policy will cover you for any medical covered medical expenses incurred in New York. Before purchasing a short-term policy, make sure that there are no coverage limitations in New York. We suggest speaking with a representative at your chosen short-term health insurance carrier before purchasing online. Assurant Health is one of the largest providers of temporary coverage in the US, so you might check with them first. 800-360-7071. You can also try HPA (Health Plan Administrators) at 800-397-5800
