My mom’s having a hard time trying to decide which Florida Medicare supplement plan to get. She needs the best coverage for her money which includes prescription. Any suggestions?

Trying to find the right Florida Medicare supplement insurance plan is easy if you know the basics of health insurance. Basically, there are two types of supplemental plans: Medigap policy (or “traditional supplement”) and Medicare Part C (or Medicare Advantage plan).

The first type of Florida Medicare supplement insurance plan which is the Medigap policy usually starts around $120 to $150 per month for someone who’s 65 years old. Traditional supplemental plans are ideal for people who visit the doctor several times a month and go to the hospital a number of times a year. Before your mom gets this type of supplemental plan, make sure she gets at least three quotes from each health insurance company: one for her age now, one for five years older, and one for 10 years older.

There’s likelihood that the Florida Medicare supplemental plan’s premium might increase substantially over time. Your mom might have problems changing to another company if she has major medical issues in the future. None of these traditional supplements have prescription coverage, so she will need a stand-alone Part D plan.

The second type of Florida Medicare supplement insurance plan is a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Part C. She can get these plans from a PPO, a PFFS, or an HMO. Most premiums for such plans are relatively low, and the premium is usually the same regardless of age. Many insurance companies already include Part D in their health plans for prescription coverage.

To get a better idea about the best Florida Medicare supplemental insurance plan, she needs to talk to an independent insurance agent who’s also a certified senior advisor.
