Can you suggest a family health insurance plan for a family of four that is affordable and has national coverage? Our family is currently in Texas but we move a lot because of my husband’s job.

A family health insurance plan acquired in Texas might not have coverage in other states unless stated in the policy. If you move around a lot, it might be a good idea to get an indemnity plan for your family. Indemnity plans allow you to choose your own physician or hospital when you need health care. You don’t need to find an in-network doctor to give you a referral. However, indemnity plans cost more than network plans.

Another option for a family health insurance plan is from a Preferred Provider Organization or PPO. Plans from PPOs allow you to go outside of the network for doctor and hospital visits. Most PPO policies are also portable from state to state. The premium for this type of plan will be lower than that of an indemnity, but the costs outside of the network will be higher. You might also be required to pay a separate out-of-network deductible. You may or may not be able to use the PPO’s network in different states depending on your policy.

Since you’re in Texas, find a local agent who can recommend a good family health insurance plan. You can also ask the insurance agent to explain how each plan from major insurance companies would work in each state.
