I am retiring from civil service (CSRS not FERS) next week. I am carrying my current FEHB program (Blue Cross Standard) into retirement at my cost only. Second, I am 70.5 so am eligible for Medicare B. Third, as a retired AF Reservist, if I have Medicare B I am eligible for Tricare. My wife is 69. I guess I should be pleased that all of this is available to be but am actually confused. Most people say I should get Medicare B but the only service I actually want thru Tricare is prescription as I want the freedom to continue to be able to select my physicians and I don’t think I can do that with Tricare…maybe, but don’t know for certain. I need to reduce my monthly prescription costs which for the 2 of us is $275. I know if I have Tricare which requires Medicare B which then subordinates my Blue Cross. If I have Blue Cross under FEHB do I have to have so called “medigap” insurance…don’t think so. I guess the bottom line is what is the advantage of having Medicare + Blue Cross versus having only Blue Cross. I simply wanted to bounce this off of someone.
