Who can I include as a dependent?
Who can I include as a dependent?
This may vary slightly from one state to another. In all cases an eligible dependent on a health insurance application may be your spouse or your child. Some states will recognize a domestic partner as a spouse, but this may also depend on if you are applying for individual or group health insurance. The laws for domestic partner dependency on health insurance will vary by state and by the type of health insurance. For children, there may be limitations on up to what age your child can be included as a dependent on your health insurance. Most states will allow your child to remain on the policy if they are a full-time and dependent college student, even if they are not living at home. The maximum age for dependent college student children may also vary by state, the health plan type and by health insurance carrier requirements. A child may be able to remain on your coverage permanently if they meet certain disability requirements that prevent them from being self-supportive. In some cases, a dependent parent or sibling that relies on you for their welfare due to a permanent disability may also qualify as a dependent on your health insurance. For more information on the regulations that govern qualified dependents in your state, contact your State Department of Insurance or your insurance company.
Can my parents still claim me as dependent? Sorry about all the details but I want to make sure I get it all in here. I am a graduate from May 2008. My parents paid for my tuition that last semester which came out around $6000 plus my living expenses which were something like $3500. My rent was $400 and I did have some other expenses. I am now in the Graduate program, for which I received a Fellowship grant, so I have no costs for that. My total income this year was around 11,000$. I do get health insurance and student insurance from my Fellowship, but I am also listed on my parents insurance. I have paid all the copays myself though and haven\’t had to use it since last September. Since I graduated I have paid for everything. Now my parents want to claim me as dependent. Can they do this while I have Fellowship student insurance? I had to sign off that I were not dependent on them to get that grant, so will I get into trouble here with my health insurance if they do?
