What are usually the provisions of Cigna health plans for full-time college students?

If your parents got their Cigna health plans from their employers, then it is usually the employer who determines the maximum age limit of dependents who are full-time students.

Some Cigna health plans usually cover full-time college students until they are 23-25 years old. If you’re still a dependent of your parents, their health plan may only cover you only until you are 19 years old.

For full-time students, your parents, as the policy holder, need to provide proof that they are supporting your studies. Some examples that you may provide the insurance company include a certification letter from the school, your class schedule, paid tuition bill, etc. Cigna may also request proof that you are still unmarried, and legally dependent on your parents.

It might be best if you call Customer Service to verify the age limit of your Cigna health plan, and the reasons for not being able to continue on with the plan. In case you have passed the age limit for dependents, or cannot meet the requirements of full-time college students, you may opt to take on COBRA.

Aside from Cigna health plans, you might want to consider other health plans that are offered through your school. These health plans cover various student injuries and illnesses, and are generally affordable than individual policies. Check your eligibility and the fee requirements for such plans. The fees that university-offered health plans are often minimal.

  1. Thanks Nancy, but this isn’t quite true. The age for dependent children to remain on their parent’s health insurance policy, be it with Cigna health plans or any other carrier, are not determined by the employer. There is a minumum requirement that is regulated by state law, but the insurance carrier may modify their specific policies as long as it meets these minimum requiremets. Ask you insurance carrier what the maximum age limit is to maintain dependent coverage on a parent’s health plan. They should be happy to tell you.

  2. What is the minimum age set by the state for health coverage of a dependant solely living at home and totally dependant on his parents?
