State-Sponsored Children’s Health Insurance Cancellation

I am a single mother with one child who just turned 19. He lives at home with me and is attending a local college in New York. He works part time and for the past 3 years he has been covered under Child Health Plus. When he turned 19, they cancelled his benefits. Is there something else that would cover him, as long as he lives at home and a student in college? I need something with low costs like the Child Health Plus has.

There are several options available to provide health insurance to your 19 year-old son, however they are not likely to be as comprehensive or as inexpensive as the Child Health Plus plan. State sponsored children’s health plans are designed to provide health insurance coverage to children of families in certain income brackets, but these plans only cover the child up to the age of 19. The coverage that is available to adults in low-income brackets is Medicaid. You might check with the Medicaid office in New York to see if he qualifies. If not, you may be able to add him to your health insurance policy, but the premiums will probably be fairly high. Or, you can purchase an individual health plan through Empire Blue Cross, but those premiums might also be high. Another option worth considering is a student health plan. Have him check with his college to see what health plans they have available for the students attending that campus.
